Fascia, Your Nervous System & Why Brain-Based Bodywork Changes Everything

I know it seems like I keep banging on about fascia but I want to share my excitement. I recently listened to Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s latest podcast episode (#620) with Jason van Blerk from Human Garage — “The Science of Fascia: How Simple Movements Can Calm Your Mind & Heal Your Body.” What struck me was that he was saying exactly what I have been going on and on about for many years but – and here’s the exciting part – he never mentions the direct connection with the brain.

This is what sets my work apart from the current mainstream of therapy. My approach integrates fascial unwinding with applied neuroscience.

Fascia doesn’t exist in isolation. It is part of a continuous feedback loop with your brain and nervous system. Fascia is rich with autonomic innervation and is dominated by sympathetic nerve fibres, meaning it is deeply connected to your fight-or-flight response.

Here’s what we know:

  • Fascia is your body’s largest sensory organ. It contains 250 million nerve endings — more than your skin — including receptors for proprioception (knowing where you are in space), nociception (pain), and interoception (your internal sense of self).
  • Fascia responds to emotions and stress. When you’re under chronic stress, your fascia can thicken, stiffen and lose elasticity.
  • Fascia communicates directly with your nervous system. It is closely connected to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and fascial restrictions can significantly impact your body’s stress response and emotional regulation.

As Van Blerk explains on the podcast, when you release the fascia, “everything unwinds and resets naturally.”

What makes my integrative approach so different? Read on…

In my hands-on fascial unwinding work, I use skilled manual therapy to release restrictions in the fascial web — restoring glide, reducing densification, and re-hydrating tissue. Critically, this also stimulates the millions of interoceptors within fascia, sending new, more accurate signals to the brain. Research shows that manual therapy can positively affect interoceptive pathways by increasing interoceptive accuracy — how well you perceive and respond to your own body’s sensory inputs.

In my Z-Health brain-based training, I use targeted visual and vestibular drills to directly change how the brain processes sensory information: Visual system training — Smooth pursuits, saccades, and near-far focus exercises help recalibrate how your brain maps and interprets the world. The visual system is one of the most powerful inputs to the brain’s threat evaluation. Vestibular training (inner ear) — VOR (vestibulo-ocular reflex) drills train the connection between your inner ear and your eyes, which is fundamental for balance, posture, core stability, and spinal health. The vestibular system directly modulates autonomic function — research confirms that vestibular stimulation influences heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic tone.

When I combine these approaches in a single session, the effect is greater than either alone. The hands-on fascial work releases physical restriction and resets interoceptive signalling. The brain-based visual and vestibular drills directly lower the nervous system’s threat level. Together, they help your body move from a state of protection to a state of performance, ease and improved balance.

What a Session Looks Like When you come to see me, here’s what you can expect:

1. Assessment — I evaluate your movement, posture, visual tracking, and vestibular function to understand where your nervous system is under-performing or overprotecting.

2. Hands-on fascial unwinding — Skilled bodywork targeting the fascial restrictions that are contributing to tension, pain, or limited movement.

3. Brain-based drills — Targeted visual, vestibular, and neuromotor exercises chosen specifically for your nervous system’s needs.

4. Integration — We combine everything so your brain and body recalibrate together — not separately.

5. Homework — Simple drills you can practise at home to reinforce the changes between sessions.

Each session produces noticeable change on the day. This is the beauty of your nervous system – it responds instantly, while building lasting improvements over time.
